Diesel or Not? Thats the Question

Diesel engines have certainly been receiving some bad press of late, but is this justified? At John Banks we would like to dispel this issue by providing you with some interesting facts about those 'dirty diesel engines.'

Demand for diesel engines has certainly reduced as car buyers are picking up on the messages in the media, with as few as 2 in 10 private buyers planning to buy a diesel next time around, and we have also seen this change in the market at John Banks with customers opting for petrol or smaller petrol engines with turbo's such as that available in the New Civic.

What is the reality for diesel engines? Infact, CO2 emissions from diesel power is lower than petrol by roughly 20% however its the tiny particles emitted out of the exhaust pipe which is causing the bad press. With the Advanced Technology introduced to diesel engines from 2011, actually these emissions are virtually zero with 99% of soot particles collected by filters fitted to diesel cars.

With Honda engines you also have no need to add the AdBlue liquid which breaks down mono-nitrogen oxides and requires topping up at intervals, the solution used by many other manufacturers.

Low emissions also come with lower fuel consumption. Even with diesel fuel being a couple of pence more than petrol at the pumps, the reduction in use will saver a driver money. Somebody covering 20,000 miles a year and saving 20% on fuel economy means more than £400 cash savings.

It all combines to make diesels decidedly more friendly than many might imagine and should remain the choice for those travelling longer distances or need a car with plenty of torque to tow.

How is buying a diesel now going to effect the future?

At John Banks, we consider that now is infact the best time to purchase a diesel on Personal Contract Purchase. The reason for this being that the offers are much stronger on diesel than petrol and the Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) underwritten by Honda UK will protect you from any future changes in the residual price of the vehicle.

Guaranteed Future Value is a figure on which a balloon payment in a PCP agreement is based. GFV is calculated based on the predicted residual value of a vehicle, which in turn is calculated according to information from the trade guides and takes factors such as depreciation, mileage and condition into account.
After being agreed at the start of the contract, the GFV will not change, meaning the balloon payment you were quotes at the beginning of the contract will not change. This is regardless of the current market value of the car at the end of the contract.

Diesel derivatives are currently still holding a greater value than the petrol alternative and with the Complimentary Diesel Upgrade on CR-V and HR-V being offered at John Banks, this equates to lower monthly payments for new cars ordered and registered before the 30 September.

In short buyers of New Honda Diesel CR-V or HR-V can benefit from lower monthly payments, greater fuel consumption and a guaranteed value for the vehicle in 3 years based upon the current residual value calculation which has not yet been effected by the bad press on Diesel engines.
