Renault‘s openR link infotainment system named as the best on the market

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric Named Best for Infotainment by What Car?

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric has been recognised for having the best infotainment system among 21 new cars tested by What Car?, highlighting the ease of use and intuitive design of Renault’s openR link system.

The electric SUV was one of only three vehicles to achieve a five-star rating in the test, which assessed how easily drivers could complete everyday tasks while keeping their attention on the road.

Simple Technology That Works for You

During the test, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric completed four common tasks — changing the radio station, adjusting the cabin temperature, switching on the heated seats and programming the sat-nav — in just 12.2 seconds.

What Car? rated both driver distraction and mental effort as low, while the car’s voice control system proved particularly impressive. Setting a sat-nav destination took just three seconds, making it the fastest system tested.

At the heart of the Renault 4’s performance is openR link with Google built-in, which combines a responsive touchscreen with familiar Google services and physical controls for frequently used functions, including heating and ventilation.

On equipped versions, drivers can access Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play directly through the car, helping make everyday journeys simpler and more convenient.

Award-Winning Innovation

The latest recognition builds on previous success for openR link, which received the SMARTBEST 2023 award from AUTOBEST for its connected automotive technology.

The system is now available across a growing range of Renault models, including the Renault 4, Renault 5, Captur, Symbioz, Megane, Scenic, Austral and Rafale.

Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, said the result demonstrates the importance of making technology accessible and intuitive, ensuring it enhances the ownership experience rather than creating unnecessary distractions.

Getting Smarter with Google Gemini

Renault continues to develop its infotainment technology, with Google’s Gemini AI assistant beginning to roll out to compatible models in June 2026.

Gemini allows drivers and passengers to interact with the system through more natural conversations and make consecutive or more complex voice requests. It can also work with selected vehicle functions and information, including climate control, navigation and electric driving range.

The result reinforces Renault’s focus on making in-car technology easy to use, allowing drivers to enjoy the benefits of connectivity while keeping their attention where it matters most — on the road.
